Original guide VERSIONS & TERMS

Authentic, Replica and reissue: reading a jersey listing

Separate design, product line and provenance when searching for jerseys across five sports. Questions and a record for interpreting listing terms.

A term such as “Authentic” or “Replica” needs context: sport, brand, product line and period. This guide helps organise a search or listing; it does not authenticate an item. Start by retaining the seller’s wording without replacing it with your own conclusion.

Design, line and provenance: three fields

A design name may identify colours, a season or an edition. The commercial line places a product within a brand’s catalogue. Provenance describes claims about this particular unit: where it came from, whether it was issued to a team or used in a game. None of these fields substitutes for evidence about the others.

Official examples that should not be mixed

BasketballNBA: Icon/City designs and Swingman/Authentic linesIs this a design name or a product line?
American footballNike NFL: Elite, Limited, Game, LegendWhich guide and period apply?
BaseballMLB: Nike product-line guideWhat is the listing’s exact product line?
HockeyNHL/Fanatics: Authentic and Replica catalogueWhich tier and year are stated?
Footballadidas: reissues of earlier-season designsHistoric design or period-manufactured item?

These are examples from the linked pages, not a complete historical catalogue or an authentication checklist. We do not transfer NFL naming to MLB or apply one current collection’s conditions to all previous seasons.

Does “Replica” mean counterfeit?

Not necessarily: a brand or league may use “Replica” for an official fan product line. That commercial meaning does not approve a particular seller. The listed item still needs photographs, labels, provenance and review of relevant uncertainties. “Authentic” also does not itself prove that a player wore the item.

Reissue: two dates, two questions

adidas’s October 2025 announcement revisits Arsenal’s 1992–1994 design. The referenced season and reissue launch are different dates. Ask about the particular item and retain its documentation: do not turn an old-design reference into a manufacture date or a condition guarantee.

A short record before deciding

For a “team-issued” or “game-worn” claim, retain the exact wording and request evidence tied to this unit. Collector discussions reveal naming and fit questions; they do not establish a definition valid across every league or authenticate a jersey.
